MPUSD and schools recognize National Mental Health Awareness Month

At MPUSD, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Throughout the month of May, schools across the district are highlighting the importance of self-care, compassion, and connection through classroom activities, campus events, and access to resources.

Counselors and wellness teams at each school site continue to offer vital services to students, including one-on-one check-ins, peer support opportunities, and referrals to community partners.

This month also serves as a reminder to staff and families that it’s okay to ask for help and that mental health support is always available.

Together, we can ensure that mental health remains a priority—not just in May, but year-round.

Student voice is a hallmark of MPUSD — and this year, students led the charge in advocating for mental health awareness.

Sasha Zariñana (Seaside High), Jackie Sullivan (Monterey High), and Marwa Sahak (Marina High) drafted a powerful resolution adopted by the Board of Education, highlighting the importance of talking openly about mental health and the challenges students face.

We’re proud of their leadership and courage to spark change.
